It's embarrassing how long it's been since I have written a blog. I'm honest—time escapes me and I get sucked into what the day drives me to do. Maybe you can relate?
I am honored, excited and somewhat nervous about the timeline of October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016, though. If you are a Florida Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, (RDN) just know that I am your elected President for the year for the Florida Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. I am very proud to serve this next year. Since I have been a Spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for the past 9 years—yep- 9-yes, it's the term limit!—I know the Academy quite well and serving as President for Florida seems like I fit in the southern peninsula glove quite well!
This past year I have served with Alyssa Greenstein (President) as President-Elect and she will agree that the year was wild with excitement, concern and pride! The main accomplishment was that our Florida Registered Dietitian Nutrition license was up for legislative review as a Modernization Act. Our Florida license was first established in the 1980's and has not been modernized since! A lot has happened in this past year and our bill passed on April 22, 2015! Let's just say my journey as President-Elect was awesome and I am continuing with that excellence this next year—along with an energetic crew of committees!
So my time on social media will be a mix of Florida RDNs, policy, food prep (my daily grind) and teen obesity (my other daily grind!). I will be on top of policy—a new passion-for food and nutrition experts. I'm your champion in Florida. If you are new to Florida or have a heart in Florida, just know that this Michigander is now loving Florida policy and the RDNs that live and work here.
My path to Florida started with an internship at Florida Hospital in Orlando after I graduated from Central Michigan University. My boyfriend at the time, now husband, Kevin told me on the 2nd or 3rd date (in Michigan) that his parents just moved to St. Petersburg, FL. "Ok, whatever", I thought. You're just saying that because you want to keep dating. Well, I ended up asking my boyfriend's parents if I could stay with them after the internship ended because I did NOT want to move back to Michigan. Fast forward to 17 years of marriage, 3 kids and 5 chickens later, I still love St Petersburg! And do you know the first thing I did when I moved to St Pete was? I reached out to the Pinellas district for dietitians. That's what my college advisor suggested and I have been hooked for 19 years to Pinellas-wow!
I love Florida and I am super proud to serve this next year. And I have a theme—we should all have theme, yes?—the theme is: VIBRANCY!
I love color, glitter, shine, glory and all the words that surround it. Any RDN in Florida should choose to be vibrant every day, week and year. We have the science, intelligence and energy to translate the evolving nutrition science and the creativity to show consumers and clients how to enjoy nutrition. So please join me on my path this year to promote the nutrition expert (especially in Florida!). I hope our paths cross soon!
